Digital Key Safe

Digital Key Safe Emergency Locksmith Bradford

In my latest video I take a look at this digital key safe.

The Keyguard Digital XL Key Safe is Burton Safe’s Police Approved key safe.  A hefty unit weighing in at approx 2KG this key safe is solid.  Not only has it passed the Secured by Design test for acreditation, it’s also achieved certification for LPS1175 Issue 8.  What the heck is LPS1175 Issue 8? I hear you ask…..put simply, it is a test of attack, and this key safe has been put through the mill against a physical attack and passed!

The words digital key safe simply means that the key safe uses numbers and letters, it is not battery powered or anything like that.  It’s actually a mechanical function and I will post another video showing how you can set the number code on the safe.

Inside, the key safe has plenty of room for two mortice lock keys and three euro lock keys….and then some!  Also room enough for key cards if you use card entry systems.  It has a built in hook for the keys and a reminder of height.  This is so you don’t place anything above the height of the hook as the door will not close properly.

It comes complete with wall fixings and an all round weather proof rubber cover.  The back of the rubber cover also acts as your template when marking your drill points for fixing…full instructions are supplied.  Outside, the numbers and letters are brightly coloured to make them easier to see in poor light, and a large easy to grip dial to lock and unlock the key safe.

All in all, probably one the best and most secure key safes you will find…Secured by Design says so!  You can buy these from my ebay shop or facebook shop, or simply get in touch to arrange purchase.  If you live in my area of covreage I also offer a supply and install service.  I have had many customers choose this key safe who have been referred to me via the Age UK Trusted Trader database.

Brisant Lock Lock Cylinder Free Handles in Gold Internal

The image above shows the handles from inside, with the unique patented Spindle Lock which prevents the handle from being turned.

The image below shows the handles from outside, where the edgeless design of the handle body continues, and offers the ultimate protection.  It’s impossible to grip the handles with mole grips (an intruders tool of choice) which in turn, if you have the cylinder version, protects the cylinder from attack.

But what if an intruder uses his mighty force to turn the handle?  Lock Lock has this covered too, because the spindle is designed to sacrifice the outer part, and so the handle will just spin round.

Check out this video of the Lock Lock handle really being put to the test!

UPVC Door Won’t Open

Customer reported that their UPVC Door Won’t Open

Upon arrival at this customers, it was clear that something was not right with the master (main) door of these French doors / windows.  The UPVC door handle would not move up or down, but the cylinder lock was operating normally.

From the photo below you can see the UPVC door with the handle removed, the top hole is where the handle spindle passes through the door, and the gearbox inside the door.

UPVC Door With Handle Removed

On closer inspection I noticed that the part where the spindle passes through the gearbox was not square, which means that it had not returned back to it’s original position, like when you pull your door handle down and let go, it returns to it’s normal horizontal position.  The hole was in a diamond shape, and even worse, each corner of it was cracked.  This was a clear sign that the gearbox had failed and thus, was preventing the customer from opening the door.

Broken Spindle In UPVC Door

A new gearbox for the UPVC door had to be obtained and installed but as it was late in the day, I installed a temporary overnight lock to ensure the customer was secure for the night.  I then returned the next day to install the new gearbox, and the door was working perfectly again.

If you notice a change in the feel of your door handle, or it is showing signs of drooping, please get in touch with your local locksmith to check the parts before it becomes an expensive lockout situation.

Lock picking

Non destructive lock picking.

One of todays jobs by GR & Son Locksmiths Bradford required lock picking.  The customer didn’t have the keys for this euro cylinder but needed it changing.  My policy is non destructive work whenever possible so this euro cylinder lock was picked in order to move the cam in line so that the lock can be removed.  This is something that would normally be done with the key.

The cylinder was replaced with a high security Ultion 3* Sold Secure Diamond lock.

Door Security Bolts

Door security bolts, also known as

rack bolts are a great addition to any wooden door.

They can offer additional security to an external wooden door, to compliment your existing mortice lock and or nightlatch (also known as a Yale lock).

Wooden Door Security Bolts

It’s important that you don’t rely on these security bolts as your primary door lock.

Normally installed in pairs, each lock would be morticed into the door, one at the top and one at the bottom.  They are operated with a star shaped key, normally from only one side but they can be operated from both sides if required.

They are great to use to restrict access to certain areas on internal wooden / timber doors.  Unlike a normal door lock which would only take a half or full turn of the key to throw the bolt, the star shaped key requires a few turns to gradually extend the bolt which then goes into the frame of the door.

What are Sash Jammers?

Sash Jammers

You may have heard of sash jammers, but what are they?

Are sash jammers any good?

Can I install sash jammers myself?

Let’s take a look;

As a local Bradford locksmiths I always advise on fitting sash jammers whenever possible.  There are some circumstances where sash jammers cannot be installed, which is why I always offer free locksmith Bradford home visits.

This image shows a single sash jammer along with the other pieces it comes with in order to correctly install it.

Sash Jammer Kit Locksmiths Bradford

Sash jammers are a simple idea and designed to compliment your existing door and window security.  Fitted to doors and windows that open inwards or outwards, sash jammers help to prevent the door or window being opened if the other security has been compromised, such as the door lock and handle.

Sash jammers should not be relied upon as the primary source of security on a door or window, and if you have a door or window where the lock is not working, but you have a sash jammer, I strongly suggest that you contact your local locksmith so he or she can fix the door or window.

It is recommended that sash jammers should be installed to all doors and windows on the ground floor of a property.  Usually a minimum of two sash jammers per door, and two per window depending upon the size of the window.  It’s not always possible to install sash jammers however, as they are quite a bulky device, and not all doors have enough room around the frame to fit a sash jammer in.  In this case you should consult your local locksmith for advice on alternative security measures.

Fab and Fix locking sash jammer on window

The image above shows a sash jammer installed to a window and in the locked position.  Some sash jammers are lockable which means that they come with what is known as a “lock block” and key.  When unlocked, the small block comes away from the sash jammer so it can be operated, and when locked, the lock block is put into place and locked.  This prevents the sash jammer from being operated.

As you can see from the photo, the sash jammer is installed in such a way that the “arm” comes down from the top.  When installing on a door it is vital that it is not installed in this orientation because if the sash jammer arm starts to become loose over time, you can run the risk of it dropping down and potentially locking you out of your property.  So the sash jammer must be installed the other way round so that the arm comes up from the bottom.

Correctly Installed Sash Jammer

The photo above shows a correctly installed sash jammer on a door, and as you can see, if it was to fail for whatever reason, the sash jammer arm will just fall down…..no lockout caused!

So, can i just screw a sash jammer into the frame?  Well, yes and no.  It would depend upon the structure of your UPVC frame.  Some UPVC frames have steel box section reinforcement inside the UPVC, in this case you can use the supplied self tapping screws and fix straight to the steel frame within.  This will give a good solid fix.

However, if your frame has no steel reinforcement, then simpy screwing into the UPVC will not provide a solid fix.  In this case you must use the supplied jack nuts and bolts.  Check the instructions that come with your sash jammers in order to do this correctly, or consult your local locksmith to have them professionally or correctly installed.

As always, I offer free help and advice and you can contact me via my contact page here, or via my business facebook page here.

Locksmith Work

Todays locksmith work in Bradford

included attending a property for a landlord who’s tenant couldn’t close the door. I actually attended yesterday and because the part had to be ordered, I made the door secure for the night.

I returned today to install the new GU Ferco multipoint mechanism, and threw in a brand new pair of Ferko UPVC door handles for free……because I’m kind like that 😀

Change key safe combination

How to change key safe combination code

This post and video covers the Burton Safes Keyguard Combi key safe, but the principal will be pretty much the same with other key safes in the same category, on how to change or set the combination code.

With the key safe door removed, you need to ensure that the current code is already set.  From new, this will be at 0,0,0,0

Turning the door over you can now move the code set pin, push it down then to the right so it sits in the small recess.  Then turn the door over to view the combination wheels and set them to your desired code.  The numbers you choose must line up with the centre line indicated by the red arrow.

Once you have set your new code, push the code set pin back to the left and it will spring back into place.  That’s your new code set!

Check my other blog post for a review of the Keyguard Combi key safe.
